Honda creates UK’s first ever truly live TV ad

Honda (UK) will stage Britain’s first ever truly live TV advertisement this Thursday evening (29 May) on Channel 4. The three minute live spot – which airs at 8.10pm – will be shown in real-time with no special effects, demonstrating the ‘Difficult Is Worth Doing’ philosophy of Honda’s marketing campaign for its new Accord car.
The campaign continues this Sunday, 1 June when ‘Jump’, the main TV advert, debuts. Filmed in the Mojave Desert, California, the ad features a large team of skydivers attempting to form shapes in the sky that hint at new technologies on the Honda Accord. These shapes include a suspension spring, a camera, a steering wheel; and ultimately the word ‘Accord’.

The live ad takes its lead from this creative – with a team of 19 skydivers attempting to form the letters ‘H’ ‘O’ ‘N’ ‘D’ ‘A’ within the live three minute time limit.

Both ads are based on the wisdom of Honda’s founder, Soichiro Honda, who once said ‘Difficult is worth doing’. This philosophy is expressed through Honda’s new Accord, created by a development team working together to overcome engineering challenges. As well as giving the car a host of technological innovations that improve safety and equipment levels, the engineers “played tug-of-war” with the project budget to ensure the Accord excels in the right areas – maximising the comfort and support of its front seats, for example.

“The campaign has been difficult, but it was definitely worth doing!” says Harry Cooklin, Marketing Communications Manager of Honda (UK). “We are always looking to move the boundaries when it comes to our advertising, and so being involved in the UK’s first truly live TV advert is perfect for us. It provides the ideal platform to take us into the final phase of the Accord campaign.”

Both ads follow a strategy of gradually building momentum and noise for the concept of ‘Difficult Is Worth Doing’ in the run up to the launch of the new car. The first activity broke on 21 April with a national poster campaign, followed by press and digital advertising. On 12 May a teaser TV campaign began featuring five short unbranded films depicting seemingly abstract glimpses of a skydiving team preparing themselves for a large event. The only clue as to what company, or product, is behind the short films is a web address at the end www.difficultisworthdoing.com.

The campaign was devised by Honda UK’s core agency team of Wieden & Kennedy, Starcom, Collective and Hicklin Slade & Partners. ‘Jump’ was created by Tony Davidson and Kim Papworth of Wieden and Kennedy.

Kia Motors has announced a unique development of its Peter Schreyer-designed sports coupe concept – the KEE_wii. First seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007, the KEE was a clear indication of the design direction of Kia product.
However, the latest upgrade to KEE will make sure it is one step ahead of the competition with a new, dynamic and more involving drive system that removes the need for a steering wheel and pedals.

Franz Josef-Hicks, head of the Advanced Propulsion Research Institute and Laboratory at Kia Motors New Zealand, explained; ‘We have taken inspiration from current computer gaming technology to create a completely new steering and pedal system called Dynamic On-Road Kinetics. The traditional driving controls are replaced by a small ‘controller’ which fits comfortably into two hands. Making steering motions with the small controller will turn the car in whichever direction the driver likes whilst accelerator and brakes are button operated. It is a very simple and intuitive system.’ added Mr Josef-Hicks.

Kia believes there is an added advantage – passengers can take the controls and enjoy the dynamic drive of the KEE_wii from any seat in the car. “This is ultimate flexibility,” enthused Mr Josef-Hicks. “If you are travelling in left or right-hand drive countries you will be able to control the vehicle from the correct seat and if a passenger knows a road particularly well they can take control and make the journey more efficient and faster. We have patented this newly developed wireless system known as Full Orthopaedic Operating Logic. Okay, so visibility is a minor issue for those in the back seats, but we don’t think this will be a problem as a lot of people don’t really look where they are going when they drive – and we have built in a fail-safe security system called Independent Driver Input Operating Technique that utilises radar to avoid accidents.

The KEE_wii dynamic control system will be available on new Kia cars a year from today and will then be optional on forthcoming generations of models as they are updated or replaced.

Alongside unveiling the updated KEE_wii, Kia also announced it plans to lobby governments to change driving test regulations. Mr Josef-Hicks added ‘Every parent is embarrassed at the sharp and speedy computer driving skills of their children – it seems obvious to us that if children as young as eight can drift, rally and race their way to multiple world championships on a games console, then this new driving system will be simple enough for anyone to use. Even from the back seat. With this new KEE_wii driving system we want governments to consider changing real word driving tests for computer simulations .

Honda Debuts Pioneering Motorcycle Safety Technology

Honda has yesterday debuted a revolutionary new ‘Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication’ system, which – it is anticipated – could reduce road casualties of both motorcyclists and car drivers.
The technology was demonstrated today for the first time, at the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium event which takes place over two days at the Opel Test Track in Dudenhofen, Germany. The demonstration exhibits the interoperability of the Honda life-saving system with other systems.

Honda has been a member of the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium since 2005 - part of Honda’s commitment to making the world a safer place for everyone and enhancing the joy of mobility – and has worked together with eight other vehicle manufacturers to enter a new era of road safety and efficiency where vehicle communication systems share vital information to aid safety and increase road-users’ awareness of what’s happening around them.

This work has resulted in the ‘Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication’ system, which utilises wireless LAN technology to link vehicles within a defined radio range and establish an ad-hoc network. Each car or motorcycle can also send information to vehicles farther afield. The system continuously monitors the position, speed, distance and direction of surrounding road users, even in conditions of darkness and poor visibility.

Data on the location of cars and bikes, information on accidents, obstructions or congestion is centralised and then sent to drivers and motorcyclists to warn them of traffic conditions ahead or possible dangers.

Motorcycle riders can view information on a display, and receive safety warnings through advanced interfaces such as an in-helmet audio system. Drivers can view information and receive warnings, for example, on their navigation system display.

In 1999 an EU funded research project investigated the causes of motorcycle accidents. Data was collected on 921 bike accidents across five European countries and it was found that the majority of accidents involving a motorcycle are caused by perception failures. 88% of the accidents were caused by human error, with 37% being caused by the motorcyclist and in 50% of cases, the driver of the other vehicle was responsible. By researching methods of inter-vehicle communication, it is hoped that these rates will be lowered in the future.

The development of inter vehicle communication is part of Honda’s ongoing approach to safety for powered two-wheelers and follows a number of Honda’s previous safety initiatives over the last 60 years, including the use and development of advanced braking systems, the first ever motorcycle airbag system on Honda’s flagship GL1800 Gold Wing, through to the latest developments in advanced braking with the specifically-for-sports-bikes designed Combined ABS, available as an option on the 2009 CBR1000RR Fireblade and CBR600RR. Honda’s Motorcycle Rider Trainer and Rider Simulator are further innovations, both of which are used for hazard perception training.

General Manager of Honda (UK) Motorcycles, Steve Martindale, commented, “Honda is proud to lead the way in the field of motorcycle safety and there’s no doubt that this is an area where other motorcycle manufacturers are increasing their focus as well. The Car 2 Car Consortium’s research and work, coupled with Honda’s latest safety innovation will result in a new era of road safety for all road users, where vehicle communication systems share vital information with the aim of helping to reduce the number of casualties on the roads. Honda fully supports the EU targets for traffic fatality reduction and we’re pleased to be able to further our commitment under the European Road Safety Charter with this latest vehicle communication safety system.”

Honda unveils new experimental walking assist device

has unveiled a new walking assist device that supports bodyweight and could reduce muscle and joint fatigue for people who stand for long periods of time or perform repetitive tasks that put strain on the lower body.
The new device reduces the load on leg muscles and joints in the hips, knees, and ankles by supporting a portion of the user’s bodyweight when bending and stretching the knees during actions like walking, going up and down stairs and crouching.

It comprises of a seat, frame, and shoes which can be fitted easily without being fastened to the user. Using one of the motors, the seat lifts to take the user’s weight as the frame between the shoe and seat bends and extends like real knees. As a result, the load on leg muscles and joints is reduced.

Two unique Honda innovations enable the device to provide natural and effective assistance – a mechanism that allows the seat and frame to follow the movement of the body and legs, and the ability to support the user’s centre of gravity in tandem with leg movement.

Kia hits 200,000 cee’d production mark after just 18 months

Production of the Kia cee’d at the Zilina factory in Slovakia has topped the 200,000 mark, just 18 months after the first car rolled off the line at the company’s brand new and environmentally-certified one-billion Euro facility.
Now producing all three cee’d family versions – five-door, SW and pro_cee’d – as well as European-only versions of the Sportage, Zilina is hitting the highest quality levels alongside production records.

This year, Zilina has set a string of new productivity records with 915 units made in a single day on Monday 21 April, 4,474 units in a single week starting 7 April and 19,300 units in one month - April.

‘This is another truly significant day for Kia,’ enthused Mr In-Kyu Bae, President and CEO Kia Motors Slovakia. ‘We produced our 100,000th cee’d last September, only 10 months after start-up, and with the addition of the cee’d wagon and pro_cee’d three-door hatch we have reached our 200,000th cee’d after only eight more months. We are proud to have achieved record productivity levels while maintaining excellent build quality.’

Mr Paul Willis, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Kia Motors Europe, added, “Since the Kia cee’d’s launch in Europe in December 2006 and the UK in February 2007, the cee’d family, with its choice of five-door, three-door and wagon body styles, plus attractive styling, high quality and 5-Star EuroNCAP safety standards, has played a significant role in winning over thousands of new consumers to the Kia brand.”

Last month, the Kia cee’d was honoured by TÜV which presented Kia with a DFE (Design for Environment) and a LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) environment certificate confirming that the design and manufacturing processes behind the successful Kia cee’d are indeed ‘environmentally-friendly’. The Kia cee’d is the first Korean brand car to receive such recognition.

With 2,748 highly-trained staff working two shifts, Zilina is currently building more than 50 derivatives of three Kia cee’d models – five-door hatchback, SW and three-door pro_cee’d – plus 10 different versions of Sportage SUV models, simultaneously on six final assembly lines that highlight the plant’s flexibility. Thanks to the high quality and durability of cars manufactured in Slovakia, all Kia cee’d models sold in Europe come with the unique Kia 7-Year, 100,000 mile warranty.

In December this year Zilina will start manufacturing cee’d vehicles with fuel-stretching and CO2-reducing technologies from Kia’s experimental eco_cee’d line-up, further underlining
the company’s strong and continuing drive to minimize its impact on the environment.

Kia Motors always claimed that its first-ever assembly facility in Europe would establish new benchmarks for vehicle quality and productivity, aiming to manufacture 100 cars per employee per year’ when fully operational and becoming the most productive car plant in Europe. The 200,000th cee’d landmark is proof that Kia’s productivity ambitions for its plant in Slovakia are progressing strongly.

“Soul presents consumers with such a broad selection of styling, comfort and equipment choices, that it redefines the concept of freedom. It’s a brand new urban car packed full of liberating ideas – a car that challenges consumers to ‘free your mind’, to build an emotional bond with their new car and to rethink everything they know about Kia,” enthuses Mr Hyoung-Keun Lee, Senior Executive Vice President and COO, International Business Division, Kia Motors Corporation.

Kia Motors Corporation Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, has overseen the evolution of Kia Soul from 2006 concept fantasy to its 2008 production reality. “The new Kia Soul will be a breakthrough vehicle for Kia on its journey to be seen as a design-led company and the maker of distinctive cars which consumers aspire to own. Conceived in the USA, developed in Korea and fine-tuned in Europe, I strongly believe that the production Kia Soul urban crossover is a completely resolved design that has successfully achieved its own distinctive style.

“Kia Soul is all about creating a car that demonstrates our passion for automotive design, gets Kia talked about, and generates an irresistible customer appeal that will translate into strong sales,” added Schreyer.

“First impressions will make a big impact and there will be several unique aspects to the experience of sitting in the Soul,” enthused Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer, Kia Motors Europe. “The tall doors and high-mounted seats make for easy access, whilst the ‘laid back’ dashboard, triple dial instrument cluster and thick-rimmed steering wheel create an unusual combination of spaciousness for passengers and cosiness for the driver to generate a very special ambience inside this new Kia.”

Every Kia Soul in Europe will be equipped with a factory-fit RDS radio/CD player with MP3 compatibility, plus USB, AUX and iPod connections in the centre console and six audio speakers, innovative PowerBass technology and a roof-top antenna.

An upgraded eight speaker sound system – complete with ‘Sound Sensitive Mood Lighting’, 315 watts output, a large diameter dash-top centre speaker, external amplifier and a sub-woofer mounted in the boot – can be specified.

In Europe, Soul customers will be able to choose between a 126 PS diesel with DPF - or a 115 PS ‘low-power’ version in some countries – and a 126 PS petrol engine, both based closely on the 1.6-litre units first designed and produced by Kia engineers for the cee’d model made in Slovakia. All three engines are Euro4 compliant for emissions.

The Kia Soul will be available with the highest levels of active and passive safety, to fully satisfy the ever-increasing consumer expectations of modern car design. Kia Soul cars supplied to the majority of countries in Western Europe and all of North America will be fitted with six airbags, four disc brakes and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) – increasingly a ‘proven technology’ in accident avoidance – as standard. In other countries ESP will be available as a factory-fitted option.

Kia Motors Corporation is planning to manufacture up to 136,000 examples of the Kia Soul annually at its Gwangju facility in Korea. The plant has been extensively refurbished for its new role, enhancing vehicle and build quality and greatly increasing the flexibility of the production processes.

Overall sales volumes are expected to see 36,000 sales in the domestic Korean market, 50,000 units in North America, 30,000 in Europe and 20,000 in other ‘General’ markets worldwide. A dedicated version of Kia Soul for the Chinese market will be produced locally in China at the rate of 40,000 units annually, starting during 2009.

The Kia display in Paris will also feature a ‘Green Zone’ where the Kia cee’d ISG, Soul Hybrid, cee’d Hybrid and Sportage ‘Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle’ (FCEV) will represent the latest results of the corporation’s continuing and massive investment in eco-friendly technologies for the future. Moving forward from research vehicles to production vehicles, Kia Motors will progressively introduce ‘eco-friendly’ technologies across its model range from 2009 onwards.

One of the first ‘eco-friendly’ technologies to transfer from concept to reality will be Kia’s new ISG (Idle Stop&Go) system which makes its world premiere at Paris and will be available on Kia cee’d petrol models from early 2009. The innovative ISG system automatically switches the engine off – when the car is stopped in heavy traffic – and on again when traffic moves, cutting fuel consumption and emissions by up to 15 per cent in typical city driving conditions.

Also making their world premieres at Paris are the Kia cee’d Hybrid and the Kia Soul Hybrid concept cars. The Soul Hybrid concept comes complete with a panoramic powered folding fabric roof, plus a transparent bonnet and floor, so the new hybrid powertrain and battery pack can be viewed by show visitors.

This Soul Hybrid features Kia’s Gamma 1.6-litre petrol engine, mated to a 15 kW, 105 Nm AC synchronised electric motor, Kia’s own CVT (continuously variable transmission), ISG (Idle Stop&Go) and ‘regenerative braking’ to re-charge its power pack. The prototype is designed to achieve a fuel consumption of 57.6 mpg and a CO2 figure of 117 g/km.

The Kia cee’d Hybrid has been created by Kia R&D to take part in ‘real-world’ test activities in Europe. Like the Soul Hybrid, the cee’d uses an upgraded powertrain with a 1.6-litre engine and 15 kW electric motor. Environmental performance targets are 58.9 mpg and a CO2 figure of 114 g/km.

As part of Kia Motors Corporation’s continuing FCEV programme, the Kia Sportage FCEV is undergoing constant testing and evaluation. Now, Kia has transported this hard working prototype to Europe and it makes its European premiere at Paris.

Intensive research has resulted in numerous technical innovations, including a higher output 100kW (136 PS) fuel cell and a new lithium ion polymer 152 volt battery pack, which give the Sportage FCEV higher performance, a greatly extended 300 km driving range and a cold weather start-up capability to operate in sub-zero temperatures. The Sportage FCEV is equipped with hydrogen-powered fuel cells and a next-generation drive train, electric motor and control unit developed in-house by Kia.

2007 Honda Civic MUGEN Si Sedan Revealed at SEMA

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today revealed a prototype Civic MUGEN Si Sedan prepared by legendary Honda tuner MUGEN equipped with a high performance suspension, forged aluminum wheels, aerodynamic body styling and a sport exhaust system at the 2006 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show. Planned for production in a limited quantity of 500 units a year, the Civic MUGEN Si will be available at U.S. Honda dealers starting in spring 2007 with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of less than $30,000 and a full factory warranty.
"Enthusiasts have equated the name MUGEN with JDM Honda performance for decades, and with the introduction of the Civic Si Sedan, the time is right for the two companies to once again join forces," said John Mendel, senior vice president of American Honda. "A MUGEN-tuned vehicle available directly from the factory provides the ultimate level of performance, quality and refinement in a specially-tuned car."

The track tuned suspension, tested at the Twin Ring Motegi racing circuit in Japan, lowers the vehicle by 0.6 inches with aggressive spring and damper tuning for enhanced handling performance while still maintaining a high level of ride comfort. Compared to the stock Civic Si Sedan, front and rear damping force (both bump and rebound) was increased between 8- and 24-percent (the rate varies depending on condition). Lightweight 16.7-pound 18x7.5-inch forged aluminum wheels (27 percent lighter than the stock 17x7 alloy wheel) and high-grip BFGoodrich(R) g-Force KDW 215/40ZR18 summer tires help to further create MUGEN's rewarding and well-balanced handling performance character.

The full-vehicle aero-package adds a front spoiler with a sports grille (with special MUGEN Si emblem), side spoilers, a rear bumper diffuser and a rear wing. The sports exhaust system reduces exhaust system back pressure from the catalytic converter back, resulting in an enhanced power curve. Additional accoutrements include front and rear MUGEN emblems outside. Inside, a serial number placard is located on the instrument panel along with a spherical 50 mm MUGEN shift knob.

The name MUGEN symbolizes Honda performance throughout Asia and around the globe. MUGEN, under license by M-TEC Co., Ltd., of Japan, has been closely associated with Honda for more than three decades in the design and manufacture of racing and premium aftermarket performance products.

Honda's activities at SEMA coincide with the November 1 on-sale date of the new-for-2007 Civic Si Sedan. The Civic Si Sedan embraces the style and performance of the Civic Si Coupe and marks the first time that "Si" performance has become available in a sedan body style.

Top spec Civic Hybrid announced

A high-spec, Sat Nav-equipped version of the Civic Hybrid has been launched by Honda (UK) to meet customer demand. The Civic Hybrid EX is now available to order from authorised Honda dealers, with the first customers due to receive cars in November. The EX also features leather upholstery and Honda’s Hands Free Telephone (HFT) equipment, which uses Bluetooth technology to allow mobile phone calls to be made safely on the move.
It’s the first time a Hybrid has featured factory-fitted Sat Nav as standard equipment, meeting a growing demand in the sector – particularly from corporate customers – for high-spec, low emission cars.

“Civic Hybrid is really storming both the retail and fleet markets – we’re up by around 500 per cent year-on-year,” says Harvey Hughes, Manager – Corporate Operations. “But what we’re finding across our range of products, is that we’re pulling customers into Honda from other premium manufacturers, and they are demanding a higher level of equipment.

“In the fleet market in particular, many drivers demand kit like Sat Nav, because they use the car for business on a daily basis. The new EX will allow us to meet those needs, and therefore we should appeal to an even wider range of businesses and user chooser drivers,” adds Hughes.

The Civic Hybrid EX is priced at £19,300 OTR. With its level of equipment, the closest rival to the EX is the Toyota Prius T Spirit, priced at £20,677.

Controls for the HFT kit are mounted on the steering wheel, while the DVD Navigation unit in the Civic Hybrid EX replaces the existing 6 CD changer, mounted in the dashboard, above the air conditioning controls. As well as offering maps of the UK and Western Europe, it can monitor traffic congestion and advise the user on alternative routes.

In addition, the Honda Sat Nav system can be controlled by voice recognition. Just hold the correct button, say the word ‘Restaurant’ and the system will locate the nearest places to eat, and then direct you to them.

An available 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine produces 268-horsepower - the most ever for any Accord - while introducing a new generation of fuel-saving Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) technology and achieving a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV*) rating. The VCM system operates in six-cylinder mode for power and 4- and 3-cylinder modes for efficiency, resulting in an EPA city/highway fuel economy rating of 19/29* miles per gallon (Accord Sedan V-6).

Also new for Accord, an Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure enhances frontal collision compatibility with vehicles of different sizes and bumper heights. Additional safety equipment standard to all Accord models includes Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), also known as Electronic Stability Control; side-curtain airbags; dual-chamber front side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), active front seat head restraints, anti-lock brakes and more.

The Accord is available in sedan and coupe body styles with 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and 3.5-liter V-6 engine choices. Available transmissions include a 5-speed manual (standard with all 4-cylinder engines), a 5-speed automatic (standard on sedan V-6 models, available with all 4-cylinder engines and V-6-powered Accord Coupes,) and a 6-speed manual transmission (exclusive to the Accord Coupe EX-L V-6 6MT).

Sedan trim levels range from the well-equipped Accord Sedan LX and plus-featured LX-P (177-horsepower 4-cylinder engine), to the nicely-equipped Accord Sedan EX (190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine or 268-horsepower V-6 engine), to the premium and upscale Accord Sedan EX-L (190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine or 268-horsepower V-6 engine). Coupe trim levels range from the well-equipped Accord Coupe LX-S (190 horsepower 4-cylinder engine), to the nicely-equipped Accord Coupe EX (190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine) to the premium and upscale Accord Coupe EX-L (190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine or 268-horsepower V-6 engine).

Interior

Premium quality with a simple, modern and spacious design describes the philosophy behind the Accord's interior. The larger Accord Sedan total interior volume of 120.0 cubic feet (+3.3 cubic feet compared to 2007) moves the EPA classification from the midsize sedan class to the large sedan class. The additional space is intended to provide "equal" seating comfort for front and rear passengers. Rear legroom of 37.2 inches (+0.4 inches) approaches the impressive second row legroom of the Honda Pilot SUV (37.4 inches). The wider interior (+1.5 inches) allows the front seats to be positioned farther apart to allow for a wide center console more commonly associated with the finest luxury vehicles.

The Accord interior is designed for a dynamic, intuitive and upscale presence, starting with an easy-to-read information display on every vehicle. A zone styling approach separates operation-related instruments (top) and information-related instruments (lower). At night, the controls are further separated by color to distinguish between climate controls (aqua green) and audio controls (white). Classically-styled gauges for the speedometer and tachometer are perfectly round (instead of being truncated at the bottom). Steering wheel audio controls are standard on every Accord. Careful attention was paid to the symmetry of the exterior and interior of the vehicle - including sight lines related to the dashboard height and the visual presence of the hood to the driver.

Redesigned front bucket seats are larger, and feature substantial lateral support to complement the Accord's sporting side. The fold-down lockable rear seatback increases cargo-carrying versatility; the sedan includes a lockable pass-through.

Three impressive audio systems are available - all with MP3/Windows Media® Audio (WMA) playback capability and an auxiliary input jack. The standard system features 160 watts, a single-disc CD player and six speakers. A Radio Data System (RDS) displays information broadcast by participating radio stations that often includes call letters, station type and programming information.

The Accord Sedan EX and Coupe LX-S add a 6-disc in-dash changer. The premium audio system, which comes standard on Accord EX Coupe and Sedan EX-L models, has a six-disc CD changer, 270 watts total amplification and seven speakers including an 8-inch subwoofer. XM® Satellite Radio is standard equipment on all Accord EX-L models.

The latest-generation of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice activation (available on EX-L) uses an 8-inch screen and an interface dial for user input. Features include the Zagat Survey™ guide for restaurants, nightlife, hotels and attractions. Navigation-equipped models also include Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®.

Exterior

Intended to convey a prestigious presence, the Accord Sedan embraces a traditional three-box shape that emphasizes both a dynamic and athletic feel with the sophistication of a timeless sedan form. Dimensionally, the Accord Sedan's overall length of 194.1 inches (4-cylinder models, V-6 models add 0.2 inches for front spoiler lip) is 3.0 inches longer than the 2007 model. The width of 72.7 inches is 1.1 inches wider, and the height of 58.1 inches is 0.9 inches taller. Even though the size is larger in every dimension, the vehicle's torsional rigidity has increased by 20 percent as a result of advanced body construction that uses 48 percent high-tensile steel - the most high-tensile steel by volume of any Accord to date. A significant benefit to the advanced body construction is that total vehicle weight increased only by approximately 5 percent despite the larger size, greater rigidity and added features.

The Accord Coupe styling radically breaks from the sedan with a uniquely aggressive image. Its long hood, sleek roofline and muscular lines suggest power and a heightened agility compared to the sedan. Dimensionally, the Accord Coupe's overall length of 190.9 inches is 3.2 inches longer than 2007 model, its width of 72.8 inches is 1.2 inches wider, and its height of 56.4 inches is 0.6 (LX-S) to 0.7 (EX, EX-L) inches higher. Compared to the 2008 Accord Sedan, the Accord Coupe is 3.2 inches shorter in length, 1.7 inches shorter in height and 0.1-inch wider.

Chassis

A performance-inspired double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension are designed to provide world-class chassis dynamics. The Accord Sedan wheelbase of 110.2 inches is 2.3 inches longer than the 2007 model, while the 62.2-inch front/rear track is 1.1 and 1.0 inches wider, respectively. The Accord Coupe wheelbase of 107.9 inches is 2.8 inches longer than the 2007 model (track is identical to sedan). Ultimately, the suspension design with wider tire sizes, standard ABS and standard Vehicle Stability Assist is intended to enhance driver confidence and handling performance.

The 2008 Accord Sedan also comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, or16- or 17-inch aluminum wheels depending on model. "The Accord Coupe has 17-inch aluminum wheels standard, with 18-inch aluminum wheels available on the Coupe V-6". The 17-inch wheels are the first for a four-cylinder Accord and the Coupe's available 18-inch wheels are the largest ever for a Honda car.

Mini Honda Jazz variant by 2011

The successful Honda Jazz is aiming for bigger things. Reports have emerged that a smaller replica of the Honda Jazz is likely to enter Asian and subsequently European markets from 2011.
The new small car from Honda will rival Toyota's iQ and Smart's Fortwo. As per the reports last week, Honda would use the engineering talent in India to a large extent in bringing out this small car. The mini Honda Jazz could use the kei car 'Life' as its underpinnings.

As this is a Honda, irrespective of its price tag, the mini Jazz will be filled with technology. A hybrid variant is planned, but to start with a small turbocharged petrol engine could be utilized.

The car would be marketed as a city car. Honda's Chinese facility could yield this model while talks about Honda's high capacity production line in India, which is currently being constructed, cannot be ruled out as a potential production site.

Audi launches new LMP1 racing sports car

Audi AG is the world’s first automobile manufacturer to develop a "second" generation diesel racing sports car. Audi aims to underline its supremacy and consolidate its expertise in car technology once more at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans with the all-new Audi R15 TDI.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans is particularly suited for this: Efficient and economical cars are especially required for the French endurance classic. Lightweight construction, environmentally friendly drive concepts and well-thought out aerodynamics are the focus of attention at Le Mans just as they are during the development of production cars. For this purpose the regulations intentionally give the engineers plenty of freedom.

Audi Sport fully exploited this creative freedom and put a new LMP1 race car on the track that differs significantly from all previous Le Mans sports cars. "The R15 TDI has many detailed technical solutions never seen before on a sports prototype," explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "To a certain extent we followed entirely new routes."

Highly efficient TDI engine

The heart of the R15 TDI is a newly developed V10 TDI engine producing more than 600 hp, with a maximum torque output in excess of 1,050 Newton meters and which reflects the latest version of the TDI Technology invented by Audi. The power unit is more compact and lighter than the twelve-cylinder engine used in the preceding R10 TDI model. The specific fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions could also be reduced. Innovations in the turbo-charging and fuel injection areas simultaneously ensure improved engine response. The R15 TDI is also equipped with a new generation of even lighter diesel particle filters.

The new sports car’s aerodynamics, which play a particularly important role at Le Mans, are extremely refined. Like the DTM 2008 championship winning Audi A4, the airflow around and through the car was optimized with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Included among the many innovative detail solutions which can be spotted at first glance are a rear wing suspended from the top and a high nose.

Innovative vehicle electrical system concept

The vehicle electrical system in the Le Mans sports car is entirely new: A lithium-ion battery, as found in some hybrid vehicles, is used for the first time. It is lighter than the conventional battery and supplies a higher voltage.

The headlights fitted to the R15 TDI also benefit from the higher power. At Le Mans, Audi competes for the first time with a low beam unit comprised entirely of light emitting diodes, which represents the next generation of Audi LED technology for road cars.

Innovative approaches

Numerous innovative approaches are also hidden in the chassis and suspension of the diesel sports car. Due to the aerodynamic concept the front and rear suspension have been raised. Thanks to a longer wheelbase and the optimized vehicle weight the R15 TDI is significantly more agile than its predecessor.

Audi is the only automobile manufacturer to have won the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel car. "With the R15 TDI we have created the base to be in a position to win also in 2009," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

The Audi R15 TDI celebrates its race debut in the 12-hour race in Sebring, Florida in the USA on March 21, with Dumfries-born Allan McNish driving one of two cars. Audi Sport Team Joest plans to field three cars at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 13/14.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage Takes Class Victory at Nürburgring 24 Hour

Aston Martin factory entered V12 Vantage – modified only slightly for competition – has swept to a stunning debut class victory in the 37th Nürburgring 24 hour race, forming part of a double Aston Martin victory in the SP8 and SP10 classes.
The near production standard V12 Vantage – which finished in 21st place overall - saw off competition from a field of largely specialist race cars in the SP8 class to claim an impressive debut win. The British marque’s factory-supported Vantage N24 entries took first and second place in the SP10 class, with the number 9 car driven by Olaf Hoppelshäuser, Richard Karner, Alexander Kolb and Maximlian Wernndl just ahead of Aston Martin’s endurance race veteran, nicknamed ‘Rose’.

Belgian team Herreman Racing added to the success of the Vantage N24 finishing fourth in class after a fault-free run with brothers Arnold and Jean-Paul Herreman, Kurt Dujardyn and Anton Gohnissen at the wheel.

The result marks the company’s best achievement yet at the Nürburgring 24 hour race says Aston Martin Chief Executive, Dr Ulrich Bez who formed part of the driver team in the V12 Vantage: “Just four years ago Aston Martin was not present in this race, so to now see so many Aston Martins racing here and so competitively is testament to our cars, our team and the faith of our customers who have supported the programme.

“For V12 Vantage we have demonstrated the reliability of our new car for all to see. I have said before that for me this race is the ultimate endurance test so for our new car to win the class on its debut and for our customer teams to perform so well amongst such respected competition is the perfect result for Aston Martin.”

Joining Dr Bez in Aston Martin’s V12 Vantage were Chris Porritt, representing the company’s engineering team, UK journalist Richard Meaden and experienced racing driver, Oliver Mathai. After qualifying fourth in the SP8 class, the team set about a conservative but progressive race strategy which saw them quickly establish the car in the podium positions before occupying second place in class into the evening. As morning broke and exhaustion prompted incidents elsewhere on the track, the team took the lead in SP8 – a position which would ultimately prove to be theirs for the final quarter of the race.

Chris Porritt said: “This is a fantastic debut for V12 Vantage. This race serves as the ultimate demonstration of the reliability of our cars in a very public test of endurance.

“The occasion is made all the more special by the exceptional team who are here running the car for us – the same people who create Aston Martins back at Gaydon.”

Driving ‘Rose’, the team of Aston Martin’s Nürburgring Engineering Centre Director and development driver Wolfgang Schuhbauer, German journalist Horst von Saurma and Japanese journalist Shin-ichi Katsura had cemented a fourth-place starting position in class after concluding qualifying on Friday afternoon. Amid frantic opening exchanges elsewhere on the track in the early stages of the race, the team remained focussed on a racing strategy which saw them in second place in SP10 as morning broke over the Eifel.

Wolfgang Schuhbauer said: “For me personally this has been one of my toughest ever races, but as a team we have succeeded. It is great to see the link between our work at the Engineering Centre here (at the Nürburgring), our road cars and our race programme stronger than ever.”

Aston Martin’s Head of Motorsport, David King added: “This is a tremendous effort from our team and our customer teams who have joined us here at the Nürburgring.

“The competition this year has been significantly tougher than ever before so to record another strong podium showing for Aston Martin for the second year in succession with near production-standard cars is quite an achievement.”

Dr Bez concluded: “This week as we launched the V12 Vantage to the world’s media we have proved the car’s ability on the road and we have ended it here at the Nürburgring by proving its ability on the track.”

Olympic Medallists Post Hot Laps at Silverstone

Following successful qualification at the UK Trials in Birmingham this weekend, Britain’s Olympic silver medallists, Phillips Idowu (Triple Jump) and Germaine Mason (High Jump) were celebrating at Silverstone today with a day’s circuit training, organised by Alfa Romeo, the Official Car Supplier of UK Athletics (UKA). The track day was a pre-cursor to next week’s London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace and next month’s World Championships in Berlin.
Idowu and Mason were joined by another Beijing medallist, Tasha Danvers (400m Hurdles), currently sidelined by injury, and UKA Performance Advisors, Steve Backley and Katharine Merry, at the home of the British F1 Grand Prix for a day of auto-testing, circuit driving and high speed laps, in top-spec Alfa Romeo MiTos.

Steve Backley, three times Olympic medallist emerged victorious over the three disciplines, closely followed by Katharine Merry.

Idowu, who took only one jump yesterday to win the UK Championships and confirm his position as Britain’s pre-eminent triple jumper, commented, ‘After competing yesterday, it is great fun to be able to do something completely different for a few hours. Whilst none of us are expert drivers, the competition was pretty intense, and well done to Steve for coming out on top.

‘Tomorrow it’s back to training. I’m looking forward to putting in a good performance at Crystal Palace next weekend, but for the next month it’s all about preparation for the Worlds, so all our training is now focused upon peaking for Berlin.’

Steve Backley OBE, former javelin world record holder, who now acts as a Performance Advisor to the GB & NI athletics team, enthused about the day, ‘We are now at a very intensive time of the season, where events come thick and fast. After the weekend’s competition in Birmingham, it’s great for the guys to have a day off and enjoy a different kind of sporting challenge. Those MiTos are really impressive – I’m 6ft 5 and I was amazed how spacious they are – it was a lot of fun!’

Damien Dally, Brand Communications Manager of Alfa Romeo, was similarly thrilled by the day’s events: ‘Passion, performance and pride are at the ‘cuore sportivo’ (sporting heart) of Alfa Romeo.

Today’s activities have been very enjoyable, but each of the athletes has demonstrated a keen competitive side and no shortage of speed on track. As a partner of UK Athletics we look forward to seeing Phillips, Germaine and all the team perform with passion and pride in both Crystal Palace and Berlin.’

The Aviva London Grand Prix, which takes place at Crystal Palace is Britain’s showpiece athletics event, starting on the 24th July. The field will feature a number of reigning Olympic Champions, including triple Beijing Gold Medal Winner, Usain Bolt.

Lotus Sport 2-Eleven GT4 Supersport unleashed

The Lotus Sport 2-Eleven GT4 Supersport race car asserts itself at the pinnacle of the 2-Eleven range, combining race winning pedigree with unparalleled handling and balance. Building on the success of the 2-Eleven road and track variants, Lotus Sport has developed this GT4 Supersport race car to compete in the European SRO GT4 Supersports category.
The Lotus Sport GT4 Supersport pushes the limits to the extreme: wearing a dramatic composite body, full rollcage and with increased power and a sequential gearbox it provides a race winning package. The GT4 Supersport offers an advanced aerodynamic package, with aggressive styling alluding to its searing performance and phenomenal racing potential.

Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc said, "Lotus has an enviable motor racing heritage that includes some of the most successful racing cars in history. We are confident that the 2-Eleven will continue our winning tradition and become a classic of the future. The 2-Eleven GT4 Supersport offers one of the most cost effective, competitive and easiest routes into this level of motorsport".

Lotus Sport has increased the power and torque available in the GT4 Supersport car to 270 PS and 247 Nm from the standard supercharged cars 255 PS and 242 Nm engine. The increases in power and torque have been gained through improved induction and exhaust systems, and with a high ratio supercharger drive system for increased levels of boost. To maximise the upgrades to the engine the engine management system has been remapped and optimised.

Lotus Sport is offering a 6 speed sequential gearbox with a centrally mounted push/ pull lever and gear selector display. The gearbox is integrated with the engine management system to allow flat shifts up through the box and an “autoblip” rev matching system on downchange. This transmission offers lightning quick gear changes, shaving those all important tenths off each gear change. A plate type limited slip differential, employed to improve traction out of corners competes the setup.

Chris Arnold, Head of Lotus Sport, said "the GT4 Supersport has some exceptional new features and provides a compelling package that has race winning credentials. This is a hugely exciting new car for Lotus Sport, we have already had good success in mainland Europe with the test car and we are looking forward to our customers successes in the 2009 season".

There will be an initial run limited to 10 cars priced at £78 255 MSRP with delivery dates in March ready for the '09 racing season. Some GT4 Supersport features can be retro-fitted to 2-Elevens that have already been purchased, offering increased versatility and allowing owners to upgrade their car as they hone their skills.

The 2-Eleven double wishbone suspension is uprated with stiffer race focused springs and dampers. The dampers are the race proven 2-way adjustable Ohlins units, allowing the handling to be fine tuned for optimum track setup. The rear suspension has been upgraded with the addition of race spec rear toe links. Semi-slick AO48 Yokohama's are fitted as standard.

Another new addition for 2009 is the Lotus manufactured FIA compliant carbon fibre race seats. The Lotus Sport seats are HANS approved and are complimented with a Schroth 6-point race harness. A 70 litre FIA approved bag tank is fitted as part of the GT4 Supersport spec along with a plumbed-in fire extinguisher system. A concession to easier ingress and egress comes in the form of a removable Lotus Sport steering wheel.

The GT4 Supersport has a rigid tonneau cover to improve aerodynamics. The aero package is improved with significant levels of downforce generated by a carbon fibre rear wing and rear diffuser, balanced by a deep front splitter. The GT4 Supersport generates up to 80 kg of positive downforce at 100 mph, which is over 10% of the cars weight.

The race car retains the excellent sports tuned ABS, variable traction control and launch control systems available on the current 2-Eleven. These race proven systems have been thoroughly tested and give exceptional feel and control in a wide variety of conditions.

The Lotus Exige is a renowned high performance coupe that has a well earned reputation of choice for drivers who demand uncompromised performance, both on the road and on the track. Lotus has always pursued efficiency and fuel economy and for the 2010 Model Year Lotus Exige S, Lotus has reduced the emissions to only 199 g/km CO 2 and increased the fuel economy to an impressive 8.5 litres/100 km on the Official European Combined Cycle and a frugal 6.5 litres/100 km on the Official European Extra Urban Cycle.

The 2010 Model Year also sees the introduction of a few key changes to the Exige to enhance the look and improve aerodynamic performance. A restyled front end and new larger, rear wing that not only reduces drag, but also gives a more muscular stance enhancing the lightweight shrink-wrapped look of the whole car.

The composite rear wing is based on the design from the Exige GT3 road car concept shown at the Geneva Motorshow in 2007. Compared to the 2009 Model Year Exige tailgate mounted wing it is 181 mm wider and mounted 46 mm higher and 61 mm further back. It is attached to the rear bodyshell clam via rear end plates which not only increases the stiffness of the whole structure but also ensures that as much of the airflow as possible passes over the rear wing. This careful airflow management increases stability, reduces drag and, most importantly, maintains the impressive downforce figures of 42 kg at 160 km/h.

The restyled front end includes a larger, more angular air intake mouth to help funnel more air through the radiator, to improve the efficiency of the engine system. Ahead of the front wheels on either side of the main aperture, two larger air intakes increase the airflow to the twin oil coolers. Horizontal vanes bisect these oil cooler air-intakes to stabilise the airflow to further increase the cooling efficiency.

Since the Exige S2 was launched in 2004, the power has increased from 190 hp through 220 hp to 240 hp in standard road form – more for the track centric Exige Cup 260 - and the new larger air intakes improve engine cooling for these current higher powered Exige variants.

Mounted below the three new air intakes is a new aerodynamic splitter for the 2010 Model Year Exige. Made from a lightweight composite, the splitter is now extended to wrap around the whole of the front end and chiseled side lips are raised to deflect air around the tyres to reduce drag. Mike Kimberley, Chief Executive of Group Lotus plc said, “Over the years, the Lotus Exige has developed a hardcore fan base around the world and its popularity has placed it as one of the legendary sportscars of the 21 st century.

So far, over 5000 Exiges have been hand-built at our high-tech manufacturing facility making it a significant contributor to our global production. The lightweight Exige has one of the highest specific power outputs of any globally emissions certified car and 133 hp per litre is a perfect demonstration of Colin Chapman’s philosophy of performance through light weight and of Lotus’ relentless pursuit of efficiency. The same technology that makes a lightweight car a high performer also makes it efficient – how many cars have performance figures of 0 – 100 km/h in 4.77 secs but produce only 199 g/km CO 2 ?”

Like all Lotus cars, the functional components of the car are also beautifully designed as Russell Carr, Chief of Lotus Design, explains, “For 2010 we have taken the already visually extreme Exige and given it even more visual drama.

The changes we have integrated into the front and rear of the Exige signal an even clearer and purposeful intent. The purposeful rear wing is race inspired, the new angular air intakes and full width splitter gives a more hard-edged and aggressive look. Overall, the Exige appears more planted and gives the illusion that both the front and rear of the car are wider than they really are without losing its agile and lithe character.”

Roger Becker, Director of Vehicle Engineering said, “The changes we have made to the Exige for 2010 Model Year are quite subtle when taken individually, but taken as a complete package they make significant improvements to aerodynamics and the overall look of the car. The Exige is a classic fit-for-purpose performance machine, the design tweaks we have made have reduced the drag, cleaned up the airflow around the front and rear of the car, whilst retaining the impressive balanced downforce figures to give an exciting high performance drive.”

The specification of the highly successful 2009 Model Year Exige Cup 260, unveiled at the Paris Motorshow in 2008 remains unchanged.

Infiniti Essence revealed in Geneva

The essence of the Infiniti brand distilled into one car and then taken to the extremes to satisfy the world’s most demanding car enthusiasts..... this is the Infiniti Essence.
Presented as a concept at the 79th International Motor Show of Geneva, Essence is a celebration of Infiniti and its 20 years history as a creator of performance cars. But equally it is an inspiring exploration into the brand’s future.

The dramatic design, technology and performance statement is a 600PS, petrol/electric hybrid coupe with rear-wheel drive. What Essence is not is merely an indulgent birthday present from Infiniti to itself.

This concept embodies Infiniti’s core values as an inspiration for the future as much as a celebration of the past. Essence showcases many of the technologies, including hybrid, and design cues that will distinguish Infiniti production cars of the coming years. And by steering Infiniti’s guiding principle of “Inspired Performance” into the luxury super-coupe market for the first time, it reaffirms Infiniti’s place among the world’s most exclusive and vibrant car brands.

New Nissan 370Z prices revealed (UK)

As with its predecessor the 370Z will be available in an uncomplicated grade structure to simplify the ordering process which commences online from Monday 2nd February. First customer deliveries are due in July.
The entry level 370Z, priced at £26895, comes equipped with Intelligent Key, engine stop/start button, power adjustable seats, climate controlled air-conditioning, 18” alloy wheels, automatic xenon headlamps, curtain airbag, alarm, audio with auxiliary input and Bluetooth hands free phone connection.

GT Pack priced at £30195 gets 19” forged RAYS alloy wheels, heated seats trimmed in black suede and leather, a six-CD Bose audio system with eight speakers, cruise control, speed limiter and Synchro Rev Control; a new innovation that automatically matches the revs, during up and down-shifts, with the manual gearbox, making gear changes faster and smoother.

Topping the range and priced at £31895 is the GT Ultimate which includes Persimmon suede leather along with a DVD satellite navigation system with full European mapping covering 33 countries and voice guidance in seven languages. Hands free operation is possible with voice recognition which also integrates with the MP3 compatible audio system.

As well as the introduction of the Synchro Rev Control to the six-speed manual gearbox, the 370Z is now offered with a new 7-speed automatic priced at £1400. It is equipped with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM) and is designed to offer quick, manual-like shifting when operated in manual mode, using either the gear selector or paddles behind the steering wheel. In automatic mode, the driver can relax and let the gearbox change gear, reacting to the driving style to choose the most appropriate shift-mapping.

Metallic paint is the only other option available for £450 and with this you also get Nissan’s Scratch Shield Paint*, which, thanks to its advanced resin coat, automatically repairs the light scratches and blemishes which are typically collected by light stone chips.

Customers and enthusiasts are also encouraged to visit Nissan’s dedicated new micro-site for the car, where they can register their interest in the car, see images and films and download the 370Z Widget to their desktop, which will automatically update them with news and developments. The website can be found at www.nissan-370z.co.uk

Compared with the outgoing 350Z, the new 370Z now sports a shorter wheelbase, greater use of lightweight body materials resulting in a weight reduction of 32kg, updated engine with more horsepower, all of which combine to improve its agility and responsiveness.

As its new moniker suggests, the new 370Z is now powered by a 3.7-litre VQ37VHR engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift). Power is rated at 331PS, while torque is 366Nm. Along with its larger displacement, the new engine gives better power delivery all the way to the 7,500rpm redline, improved low-end power and more high-end torque.

Inside, buyers will welcome the removal of the rear strut brace (replaced with less intrusive structural reinforcements) and the addition of a new “shelf” area behind the seats, creating an ideal storage area. A retractable cover is standard on the 370Z and a locking glove compartment has also been added.

Life on board has been improved thanks to the addition of an engine start and stop button, larger diameter dials and the use of soft touch materials on the instrument panel, stitching on the centre console, leather and suede on the seats and doors, as well as a black roof lining (depending on grade).

UK deliveries will begin in July 2009.
